Forest Carbon Storage
Forested land is essential in circulating carbon through the absorption of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. The absorption of carbon dioxide through photosynthesis and the storage in tree biomass, soil, and organic matter is known as carbon sequestration.
The experienced Green Timber team is one of the few in North America involved in the carbon market. We work with precision and accuracy to optimize your opportunity.
Optimizing Carbon Credits
Large landowners across the United States have started to utilize their forest land to sequester carbon by selling carbon credits. These credits serve as a form of income for the landowner who receives payment from carbon dioxide emitters to offset their impact on overall atmospheric carbon dioxide levels. The credits available to a landowner vary by land size, forest type, and management practices. The credits available through forest carbon programs are continuously changing, but our forest carbon team can help you determine which program best aligns with your property landscape.
Forest Carbon Compliance
Forest Carbon projects are typically in two formats - compliance projects and voluntary projects. Through forest carbon compliance projects, it is a cap and trade, where companies that exceed their emission standard are mandated to buy carbon credits - typically based on the region. In voluntary projects, companies are simply purchasing forest carbon credits to meet their own emission standards (rather than through a mandate).
Voluntary forest carbon projects have registries through a variety of resources, including: American Carbon Registry, Climate Action Reserve, Verified Carbon Standard, and Gold Standard. Each of these companies' registries offers different protocols for management for timeline and sustainability requirements.
Forest Carbon Support
Following forest carbon inventory, your land will go through a third party verification process to ensure the land inventory meets the standards. The Green Timber’s forest carbon team will provide support through the process to ensure you are on the right track to getting your forest carbon credits to market, while reducing costs and avoiding any setbacks. We will help you with an annual maintenance plan to keep your forest carbon project in compliance with the land regulations.
Forest Carbon Credit Options
We work with you through a range of forest carbon program options. We most commonly work in the Family Forest Carbon program, Forest Carbon Works, Core Carbon, and Landowner Aggregation. Worried about the options? Our forest carbon credit team will help you find the right program that aligns with your forest size and location, or you can take our quiz to find out more!
